How does it work?

Producing heat and power from biomass can be simpler than you may think, there are a variety of different solutions available to create electricity from biomass.

Biomass Steam Boiler and Steam Turbine

OMNI Heat and Power can provide a turnkey biomass CHP solution by integrating a biomass steam boiler, with a steam turbine generator. This combined package will provide both heat and power from biomass fuels. This is a long established solution and heat uses from the plant will potentially be eligible for the governments Support Scheme for Renewable Heat biomass tariff.

Biomass Thermal Oil boiler and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Generator

Another solution for a biomass combined heat and power package is to utilise a biomass thermal oil boiler to provide 300c thermal energy to an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) generator. This is a extremely reliable solution and does not require the high pressures involved with a biomass steam boiler mentioned previously. This system can also provide two grades of heat in the form of high temperature thermal oil for indirect high temperature heating applications directly from the boiler as well as Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) from the condensing cycle off the ORC generator. This solution is a very low maintenance solution for biomass CHP, as well as heat uses from the packaged system possibly being eligible for incentive payments from the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH).

Biomass LTHW Boiler and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Generator

This solution is similar the solution mentioned above but uses lower temperatures, which brings the capital cost down. This solution is only suitable where low grade heat can be utilised to maximise efficiency as only 40c-50c flow temperatures can be provided from the evaporation cycle on the ORC, which is fine for many space heating requirements.

Biomass Gasification

Gasification of biomass produces a syngas which can be used in a conventional engine chp, this solution provides a high electrical efficiency in comparison to the above mentioned solutions. Biomass gasification is also suitable for a wide range of potential feedstocks in combination with the correct gas scrubbing and filtration equipment before use in the engine.

What fuels can I use?

A range of potential fuels can be utilised with the above mentioned biomass CHP solutions, included but not limited to biomass wood pellets, biomass wood chip, waste wood, SRF, RDF. The main limiting factor on potential fuels is local environmental regulations around emissions from the plant.
